Why Website Blockers Won’t Stop Your Porn Addiction – Part 1

Man, this article is going to save me hours of email time. And it will possibly save you days, weeks or months of learning the hard way.

See, one of the things people email me about a lot is website blockers. They say something like “I need a way to block porn on my phone”, and then they want to know what apps/programs I recommend.

The first thing I always tell them is this harsh truth:

If you’re relying on website blocking software as your only solution to porn addiction, you won’t succeed over the long term.

Boom. There, I said it.

It would be real sweet if you could just install a program and then never have to worry about relapsing to porn again. But it doesn’t work that way in reality.

I know this from talking and working with a lot of people, and from my personal experience. I wasted so much time before I realised that porn blockers aren’t the true answer.

So let me save you from that dead end so you don’t get a nasty shock later. The purpose of this article to put you on the right track straight away.

You Need to Change Yourself, Not Just Your Environment

A website blocker is just a superficial tool that changes your external environment by stopping access to porn sites. But the porn addiction is inside you, and that’s where the real change has to happen.

To achieve genuine success, you need to take personal responsibility and completely own this challenge. You need to get right to the root of the problem, not just dabble around on the surface.

And you need to take solid action instead of hoping the porn blocker will do all the work for you. This journey ain’t some pleasure cruise, son!

Hold On, Jay – You Recommend Using Website Blockers Yourself!

It’s true. One of my first recommendations in the Actions and Insights resources is to use a website blocker to stop easy access to porn.

I’ve also published a list of the most promising porn website blockers to help you with that.

But let me be clear on this: I recommend using a website blocker only in the initial stages of quitting porn to stack all the cards in your favour.

Its purpose is just to help buy you time away from porn while you’re working on deeper and more powerful things to create true, lasting success.

Over the long term, I don’t recommend porn blockers at all. As you conquer your porn addiction, you’ll be able to remove website blockers for good and still not have any problems with urges or relapses.

Once you know how to ride a bike, you can take the training wheels off. You know what I’m saying?

Personally, my website blocker is long gone now and porn addiction is no longer an issue. I’ll help you get there too.

So: yes, I do recommend using as many tools and strategies as possible to create momentum when you start.

But it’s critical that you don’t kid yourself that a website blocker is the final answer to all your porn problems. It’s only a backup safety net, not the be all and end all.

A Website Blocker is a Temporary Support Aid at Best

You like my porn blocker = training wheels analogy? If not, don’t worry – I’ve got a million more ;) Here’s another one for you:

Think of a website blocker as being like a crutch when you have a broken leg. The crutch is a temporary support aid that helps you to get around while your leg is healing.

But cruising around on crutches isn’t exactly the way to go for the rest of your life. How are you ever going to bust out your funkiest disco moves on the d-floor with those things?

The true solution to your problem is for your leg to heal, and to avoid breaking it again in future.

Likewise, you need to heal your porn addiction at its core, not lean on some external aid to dodge the real problem.

Also, the longer you use any crutch, the weaker you become. So the more you rely on a porn blocker instead of developing your own inner strength and judgement, the more these parts of you will deteriorate over time.

But Wait! There’s More!

In case all these astounding analogies don’t do it for you, check out Part 2 of this article for the more practical side of why website blockers won’t stop your porn addiction.

Porn Free Power Actions and Insights - How to Stop Watching Porn and Overcome Porn Addiction
From the Fans
"Jay,

Thank you for creating your website and your resources. I have known for quite some time that I was missing something in my approach to quitting porn; I knew that will-power wasn't cutting it and that something in my thinking and outlook on life had to change, but I just didn't know how to get there.

I'm only a few articles into the series, yet I can tell there is something different about this time, because I realize that it's not merely about resisting my urges, but really changing the way I think about myself, my past, and my future. Makes complete sense.

I really like how you designed your resources as a series to be periodically delivered via email. It gives me something to look forward to and is helping me take this on---one day at a time. Thank you, man.

Porn has taken me to some dark and shame-filled places. I was afraid that I would never be able to stop the repetitive and damaging cycle. Your writing has helped me to feel hope again, and for that I am overwhelmingly thankful. You are really helping me, Jay, and I hope your approach to fighting this addiction is helping countless others as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you:)"

"Hi Jay,

Thx. for all your help, and please continue to forward your emails and materials to me.

I have found that 'Inner Anchor','Inner Source of Power' that you indicated would be essential to victory over porn. This has given me a porn-free identity, giving NO PLACE to porn in my life at all.I am continually aware that I may NEVER become complacent.

I thought I want to let you know, but have waited a considerable time so as to absolutely, resolutely sure that porn is totally out of my life and this email confirms it for me!!!"

"Dear Jay

Thank you for your loving, supportive and non judgmental guidance through this hard time. Your regular exercises are a great help in breaking the bonds of this addiction and your weekly check ups are a reminder that I'm not alone in this battle.

After almost 20 years of fighting this addiction on my own, you have given me the tools to break it's chains. I was so close to losing my wife and family but now we are closer than we had ever hoped to be.

All that ugly guilt and shame has been washed away and in its place a sense of humility, forgiveness and lots of love.

I pray for God's continued strength for you as you continue in your mission.

Thank you"

"For me, porn was a web of deceit I was ensnared in. I couldn't get free. As I've started doing the Action Series Porn Free Power offers, the different threads that had attached to my life long ago have begun to fall away. It's so effective and simple.

You have no idea how much power you possess until you meet Jay and the amazing support he offers, its life changing. Thanks so much Jay and PFP!"
