Man, this article is going to save me hours of email time. And it will possibly save you days, weeks or months of learning the hard way.
See, one of the things people email me about a lot is website blockers. They say something like “I need a way to block porn on my phone”, and then they want to know what apps/programs I recommend.
The first thing I always tell them is this harsh truth:
If you’re relying on website blocking software as your only solution to porn addiction, you won’t succeed over the long term.
Boom. There, I said it.
It would be real sweet if you could just install a program and then never have to worry about relapsing to porn again.
But it doesn’t work that way in reality.
So let me save you from that dead end so you don’t get a nasty shock later. The purpose of this article to put you on the right track straight away.
You Need to Change Yourself, Not Just Your Environment
A website blocker is just a superficial tool that changes your external environment by stopping access to porn sites.
But the porn addiction is inside you, and that’s where the real change has to happen.
To achieve genuine success, you need to take personal responsibility and completely own this challenge. You need to get right to the root of the problem, not just dabble around on the surface.
And you need to take solid action instead of hoping the porn blocker will do all the work for you. This journey ain’t some pleasure cruise, son!
Hold On, AJ – You Recommend Using Website Blockers Yourself!
It’s true. I give a lot of tips to get you started in the free porn addiction recovery guide, and one of them is to use a website blocker to stop easy access to porn.
But let me be clear on this: I recommend using a website blocker only in the initial stages of quitting porn to stack as many cards as possible in your favour.
Its purpose is just to help buy you time away from porn while you’re working on deeper and more powerful things to create true, lasting success.
Over the long term, I don’t recommend porn blockers at all.
As you conquer your porn addiction, you’ll be able to remove website blockers for good and still not have any problems with urges or relapses.
Once you know how to ride a bike, you can take the training wheels off. You know what I’m saying?
Personally, my website blocker is long gone now and porn is no longer any problem whatsoever. I’ll help you get there too.
So: yes, I do recommend using as many tools and strategies as possible to create momentum when you start.
But it’s critical that you don’t kid yourself that a website blocker is the final answer to all your porn problems.
It’s only a backup safety net, not the be all and end all.
A Website Blocker is a Temporary Support Aid at Best
You like my porn blocker = training wheels analogy? If not, don’t worry – I’ve got a million more ;)
Here’s another one for you:
Think of a website blocker as being like a crutch when you have a broken leg. The crutch is a temporary support aid that helps you to get around while your leg is healing.
But cruising around on crutches isn’t exactly the way to go for the rest of your life. How are you ever going to bust out your funkiest disco moves on the d-floor with those things?
The true solution to your problem is for your leg to heal, and to avoid breaking it again in future.
Likewise, you need to heal your porn addiction at its core, not lean on some external aid to dodge the real problem.
Also, the longer you use any crutch, the weaker you become.
So the more you rely on a porn blocker instead of developing your own inner strength, judgement and direction in life, the more these parts of you will deteriorate over time.
But Wait! There’s More!
In case all these astounding analogies don’t do it for you, check out Part 2 of this article for the more practical side of why website blockers won’t stop your porn addiction.
